Oscar Vega started making music three years ago at age 15, and released his first serious attempt at music, ‘Lucy’, in March this year.

The DC singer songwriter (and member of band, Ace Empire), says his father was a singer and guitar player. “He no longer lives with me but I got my talent from him”.

‘Lucy’ opens up with the crackling of a record player before the strident vocals of Vega emerge, swelling into the music. It’s clear that Oscar has considerable singing talent, with the song exhibiting influences from the likes of Tame Impala and Pink Floyd. Parts of Lucy sound like they’ve been sampled from the old nursery rhyme, ‘Rain Rain Go Away’; and somehow also reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s ‘See Emily Play’.

It’s hard to categorise Vega’s sound. ‘Lucy’ is something between trip and psychedelia, yet at the same time it’s evident he’s been influenced by Alternative Hip Hop. ‘Lucy’, released in early March this year, has been received very well, with 63.3 thousand Soundcloud streams to date. Vega says,

“I am hungry for success and to spread good music because my areas taste of music is very materialistic and ugly. I hope to change this. I value quality over quantity. My music can be emotionally charged but can also be very fun. I have very creative ideas and usually the songs have much deeper meaning or double meanings like with Lucy.”

Oscar Vega hopes to emulate the success of ‘Lucy’ with his new release, ‘Back’, out on April 13. It’s more of an R&B style track, but nonetheless showcasing Vega’s immense vocal talent. It’s strong, powerful, and evocative, with strong beats and a sultry smooth style not to dissimilar to Enrique Iglesias.

You can find Oscar Vega online on Twitter and Snapchat (add him on OscarVega). ‘Lucy’ can be downloaded from Soundcloud. Watch out for ‘Back’, available from 13 April.
