In honour of country legend Merle Haggard, who died on his birthday, April 6, comes our Essential Cover this week. Luke & Mel, an award-winning country duo from Manchester, sing their tribute to Haggard: ‘Today I Started Loving You Again’.

Comprising Luke Thomas and Melanie Greggain, Luke & Mel joined forces in 2012, having met through performing in the UK’s top touring theatre show, Country Legends. Prior to this, Mel ws performing as a solo singer/songwriter, as well as appearing in musicals around the UK, including London’s West End.

Luke was working as a session guitarist which saw him play on all the biggest theatre stages in the UK with shows like ‘One Night of Elvis’, ‘Dolly The Show’. ‘Country Legends’ and PJ.Proby’s 2010 UK Tour. He’s also played on albums including Raintown’s ‘Writing on the Wall’, Mike Ward’s EP, Thorne Hill’s ‘No More Holding Back’, among others.

The duo are about to release a Double A side of their new single, ‘Bad Habit’, and a new mix of their award-winning song, ‘Somethin’ About A Woman’.
