Calling the new album ‘An Introduction to Darlene Love’ is an ironic contradiction as this amazingly talented lady has an extraordinary career spanning over five decades and frankly needs no introduction. Darlene has the kind of voice that leaves you with goosebumps and a lasting impression in your mind, deep, seductive and captivating. Hardly surprising then that she has worked alongside and recorded with some of the best known artists in the music industry over the years such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke. Add to that a successful acting career both in film and theatre and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2011 and you have a very small insight into all that Darlene has achieved.
A notable collection of songwriters feature on the new album; Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Van Zandt to name but a few, and coupled with the remarkable flair Darlene possesses it is fairly obvious that this is going to be dynamite.
The album is all newly recorded material and contains a variety of classic hits as well as up to date tracks all personalised with the Darlene Love stamp. ‘Forbidden Nights’, written by Elvis Costello is just one of those fresh numbers sung in a classic style which encapsulates the 50s/60s sensation but also fits comfortably into a modern day setting. It is one of those tunes that has a fun summertime feel to it.
Darlene’s version of the classic ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ is both breathtaking and inspirational. The power behind her voice gives it a “wow” factor which broadens its appeal to a wider audience as it doesn’t just catch your attention, it reaches out and grabs it by the throat.
