Introducing: Millions

millions

Millions are an indie pop quartet from Brisbane Australia who are about to launch themselves on the UK this spring with their debut self-titled EP, “Millions”.

Millions formed in 2011 and comprise Dominic Haddad on lead vocals, brothers Ted and Louis Tillbrook, taking guitar and drums respectively, and Campbell Smith on bass. Millions have been making a name for themselves in Australia sharing stages with such acts as Peace, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and San Cisco, and performing at festivals such as Splendor in the Grass, the Falls Festival, and the Big Day Out.

If the Tilbrook brothers’ name sounds familiar, it would likely be because their father is none other than Glenn Tilbrook, founding member of 1980s group, Squeeze. Glenn produced the UK release of “Millions” at his Greenwich studio. While visiting family in the UK the band took the opportunity to play a few select shows, including support for Babyshambles.

“Nineteen”, the lead track on “Millions”, was originally produced in Australia by Malcolm Besley and mixed by Gordon Raphael, who also worked on, “Is This It” from The Strokes. It’s a great pop song that Australian radio station Triple J took to instantly, and put on their high rotation list. Additionally it made Channel V’s “Ripe Clip of the Week”.

“Clementine” has a very Christmassy feel about it, with jangly guitar and velvety crooning from front man Dominic. Poppy and exuberant, it definitely has a “listen-again” quality about it.

Final song on the EP, “Always”, takes us back to 1960s California bands. It’s vaguely reminiscent of The Monkees, with more than a dash of The Beach Boys and a smattering of psychedelia a la The Doors. It conjures up long hot summers and surfing, and we really liked it a lot!
