Are you going to The Great Escape Festival in Brighton this year? If so, why not pop into The Red Lion on Friday 15th of May. Presented by Impressive PR, “Impressive By the Sea” is part of “Alternative Escape” (officially part of the Great Escape Festival) and promises a fantastic afternoon of music, featuring some of the best bands from the UK and beyond.
The event starts at 12 noon with Evering, who we’ve featured recently on Essentially Pop. London based, Scots folk duo Evering are composed of singer/songwriters, Dawn Coulshed and Chris Yendell.
Having first made each other’s acquaintance in Edinburgh in 2013, it wasn’t until last year, when they met up in London, that they decided to collaborate. Evering combines strong harmonies with silvery-toned piano and guitar.
Next, at 12.40, are Ekkoes, a three piece electro-pop band from London with a style which is on the one hand 80s influenced (there’s a lot of Pet Shop Boys to be heard in “Fight The Feeling”) and on the other quite contemporary, Ekkoes are a band with a great future ahead of them.
At 1.20, The Magnettes bring a taste of Sweden to The Black Lion. The duo, composed of Rebecka Digervall and Sanna Kalla, will be releasing their new single “Sore Feet and Heartbeats” on 6th July. The pair have just come back from SXSW in Austin, Texas, and have signed a development deal with DO Music. The Magnettes will begin writing and recording their debut album later this year in Sweden and the UK.
Staying in Scandinavia, Norwegian singer Mariann Rosa brings her own unique blend of colourful style and sound to the Red Lion at 2pm. Former Judge on Norway’s version of ‘Idol’, Mariann is already a household name in her native Scandinavia. As former front woman of Norwegian thrash power pop band Surferosa, Mariann has supported the likes of The Killlers, Electric Six and Turbonegro.
We’ve featured Millions here before, the indie pop quartet from Brisbane Australia who are about to launch themselves on the UK this spring with their debut self-titled EP, “Millions”.
Millions formed in 2011 and comprise Dominic Haddad on lead vocals, brothers Ted and Louis Tillbrook (sons of Squeeze founder, Glenn Tilbrook), taking guitar and drums respectively, and Campbell Smith on bass. Millions have been making a name for themselves in Australia sharing stages with such acts as Peace, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and San Cisco, and performing at festivals such as Splendor in the Grass, the Falls Festival, and the Big Day Out.
The Black Lion welcomes Millions to their stage at 2.40.
Any fan of classic UK rock will be no strangers to the sixth and final act at this event. The Zombies, formed in 1961 in St Albans and led by Rod Argent (piano, organ and vocals) and Colin Blunstone (vocals). The group scored British and American hits in 1964 with “She’s Not There”. They had further success in the US with the singles, “Tell Her No” in 1965 and “Time of the Season” in 1969. The lineup may have changed slightly since those days, but Argent and Blunstone remain, and with a back catalogue stretching more than 40 years, The Zombies promise to get everyone up on their feet and dancing when they hit the stage at 3.20pm.
