Ellys – The Good Ship, Kilburn 21/4/2015

Ellys is a pop-folk singer/songwriter from Worcester. Conveying an inarguable maturity in her songwriting, Ellys sings stories of life, love and spring time, through music written in her countryside home. We caught her at The Good Ship, Kilburn, on Tuesday night, and were struck by her passion and performance.

Ellys, playing on guitar, introduced her song “Oh Brother”, which she’d written about her little brother. Touching, moving, lyrically very clever, the song made us hope that she gets on with her younger brother now:

“Do you feel the same when we talk over you?”

“It’s not your fault, you don’t mean to harm, you’re my sibling, the other half of our parents’ hearts”.

Segueing into a song she’d written recently about the lovely weather we’d been experiencing in the UK, “So Blue Sky” is a jaunty number featuring lovely bouncy lyrics, such as,

“So sunshine, stick around, don’t go hiding behind cotton candy clouds”

This was followed by “Chewing Sand”, a song Ellys had written about procrastination, leading into “Gracefully”, probably the highlight of her set – a song about growing older. Ellys had said she’d always looked forward to growing old, but lately had started to fear it. A beautiful song, with very evocative lyrics:

“the pages are torn out, the stories we made up”.

Ellys treated us to a lovely rendition of the Laura Marling song, “New Romantic” before finishing up with the very lovely “This Dance”, a song about dancing with the one you love.

We really enjoyed Ellys, with her fresh sound and sunny lyrics, and we look forward to hearing more from her in the future.

You can find Ellys on Soundcloud and Facebook.
