Tessa Bird Releases Epic Single ‘The Heavens Did Protest’

Out tomorrow July 6, ‘The Heavens Did Protest’ is the first single from soul singer Tessa Bird. The artist has re-invented herself as a solo artist after a decade of writing and performing with her sister, and their band, Sitara.

‘The Heavens Did Protest’ took 8 years to develop from concept to single, and tells the story of a fragile time in Bird’s life, when she broke up with her partner.

“I was lying on the floor of my lounge room in a place of deep grief, when a 3-day torrential rainstorm hit, and the weight of the rain pounding on the roof somehow soothed me. It was as though the skies themselves were feeling the pain with me, crying in protest of all that had occurred.”

The track had been fermenting in the back of her mind, but finally, with the vocal production of Simon Cohen, known for his work with Justin Beiber, Lizzo, Masked Astronauts, Jessica Mauboy, along with a gorgeous string composition by Helen Grimley, it’s finally about to be birthed into the world.

Tessa Bird’s passion to create music comes from a desire to express her emotions, and her deeply personal songs show the listener a glimpse into her heart and soul, while at the same time discovering their own connection to her music. Bird takes inspiration from other such strong female artists as Amy Winehouse, and Florence Welch, while her sound is reminiscent of the likes of Freya Ridings.

Bird’s metaphorical lyrics and emotional tone come together with her angelic voice, as she tells a story of the heartbreak of, and eventual coming to terms with, a relationship ending. Sad and sorrowful, it’s a beautiful introduction to this artist.

Speaking of the track and the lyric video, Tessa said,

“It’s some of my favourite lyrical writing I’ve ever done. Combined with the soaring harmonies and elaborate background instrumentation, I feel like the song has finally matured into the epic piece I had always dreamed and hoped to create – and so the lyric video highlights that perfectly.”
