Bloom de Wilde Releases Latest Single ‘Garden Of The Sun’ Today July 23

Opening with the horns so familiar in her work with Sam And The Womp, Bloom de Wilde’s new single, ‘Garden Of The Sun’ is a cornucopia of summertime delights.

Bloom wrote the calypso-feeling song a few years back, when she found herself separated from her closest friend, who’d moved to greener pastures on the other side of the world. Despite being so far apart physically, the pair were nonetheless still able to feel the connection, and it pulsed even stronger than before.

“It felt like somehow our hearts could rise above the earth and shout hello very loudly from space.” expresses Bloom. “When we met again after years, it seemed we had never actually been apart.”

Bloom’s award winning EP, the 2020 release, ‘The Heart Shall Be Rewarded by the Universe’, borrows its title from a line in her new release, and the track is as rich, colourful, and wild in its imagery as Bloom herself. Lyrics such as

“We’re just in our play world, the garden of the sun, we are the icing cake”

entice the listener, filling them with intrigue and wonder. Listen with your eyes closed and see what visions your mind comes up with!

The track was initially written in the kitchen in the middle of the night, as Bloom found herself sleepless and restless, and took to putting on record a series of soft melodic, almost ASMR whispers, using her i-maschine app. She returned to her recording the following day, and after initially adding twinkling piano, she returned over and over during the next few weeks, supplying improvisations, and other haunting additions, to further unlock the song’s potential.

Bloom took the track to the studio last year, where it was recorded in one take by Joe Leach at The Cow Shed; with Bloom laying down vocals and Fender Rhodes live, alongside long time band member Juba Wetzler, on drums.

The track takes in influences from Bloom’s favourite Studio One Ska tunes (Jackie Mittoo & The Skatalites’ “El Bang Bang”), as well as elements of Radiohead and Kurt Cobain. Bloom then layered-in clavichord, SP001 synth bass, samples and programming. The woozy, undulating trumpet line of ‘Garden Of The Sun’ comes of course, courtesy of her Sam and The Womp partner: Sam Ritchie.

Electric and double bass were provided by Mao Yamada, while Nick Trepka and Kai Nobuko sang additional backing vocals. Blooms own children, Dizzy and Sesame, gave a further ethereal quality to the track by singing the “hello!” parts.

Co-produced by Bloom de Wilde and Nick Trepka, the track was further mixed by Nick Trepka and mastered by Nick Watson at Fluid.

“Never stop believing” muses Bloom on her latest single. “The heart shall be rewarded by the universe; because if you follow the path of the heart it is often difficult and winding and it doesn’t always make sense, but in the end this path is the most beautiful and rewarding.”
