Bradley Cowens Jr, who performs under the stage name Kam Dutchie, grew up in the streets of Atlanta, and amid all their illicitness. However, he made sure not to let the streets define him nor suck him in, and instead turned to music as a means by which to get away from the noise outside and instead make sounds of his own, that he could control.
Graduating in 2010, Dutchie immediately decided to dive headfirst into his work, honing his music and moulding it into the the perfect fusion of trap and hip-hop. His debut album, ‘From da Struggle to the Hustle’, is eight tracks long, and tells the story of the workings of his inner mind. He found radio airplay with his single, ‘Bout A Check’, and it features on Coast 2 Coast mixtapes, as well as a viral SoundCloud play.
Kam Dutchie takes pride in his raw persona; he’s had hurt, and is honest with himself about his feelings, so in the music video for his new single, ‘Pain’, he doesn’t stray from his backstory. Opening with a drive past a cemetery, the undertone is set for the video; and in a spoken word narration he starts telling his story. Adding flowers to the memorials he explains his commitment issues with romantic partners, along with family trauma. Music is his channel of expression, and lyrics are his understanding of his internal struggles and external forces. In spite of betrayal, heartbreak, and the many tribulations Dutchie has faced, he keeps moving forward, grinding. Dutchie sees God as a safe refuge in tough times, but it’s his own will to hustle which enables him to get him to where he wants to be. Dutchie pays homage to those artists such as Nipsey Hussle, and Juice Wrld, who lost their lives to senseless violence, and overdoses. Kam Dutchie therefore, is keeping the faith, not for just himself and God, but also for all the fallen.
