St Louis Missouri singer Morgan Taylor knows that lullabies aren’t always benign. Her debut single, ‘Lullabye’, gives fans of contemporary R&B and soul a track suitable for any time of the day or night as she sings this “kiss-off” dedicated to a misbehaving boyfriend.
On the surface, ‘Lullabye’ is soothing. The artist has a voice like soft touch, with a pleasant register that can deliver both friendly, conversational style singing, as well as drama. Morgan Taylor can take her listeners to places they dare not otherwise go, and alternatively, rock them to sleep. In ‘Lullabye’, her gentle soprano only slightly disguises the scorn she feels to her wayward boyfriend, and yet her lyrics feel as soft and delicate as the touch of a rose petal – despite containing the sting of a thorn.
The video for ‘Lullabye’, directed by MJ Furillo, includes one of St Louis’ many statues to its musical greats, and it’s just one of many wide-angled views we’re given of this unique looking city, as we’re shown Morgan Taylor, supported by her friends, confronting a cheating boyfriend.
The clip begins at Mother’s Fish, a popular St. Louis restaurant and landmark, where Taylor gets the call about her cheating boyfriend. It’s not long until she’s in her car, a determined look on her face, on her way to University Park and the Delmar Loop. It’s at The “Loop,” one of America’s great shopping streets, under the awning of a vintage movie theatre, that our star catches her man in the act.
