Marathon Domm – ‘Stamped Up’

‘Stamped Up’, from Marathon Domm, and featuring Philthy Rich, is a chilled out hip hop track, with a strong piano vibe offset by a heavy trap beat. Marathon Domm and Philthy Rich spit out bars with passion; telling their story with fiery passion.

Although Marathon Domm is still a newcomer to the hip hop scene, he’s on the up and up, and while his references – money, a complicated love story, and self confidence – may well be heard in many other tracks in that genre, he manages to convey it in a new way, with a refreshing authenticity. Listen through headphones to truly appreciate the layering of the instrumentals, and to truly take in the lyrics.

The accompanying music video, shot in red, with the occasional flash of white, and green, has all the hallmarks of a “typical” hip hop clip, with expensive cars, jewellery, and beautiful women. Scratch below the surface however and you realise there’s a lot more to it: one man wears a shirt emblazoned with a photo of Breonna Taylor, a victim last year of police brutality, and for whom justice has not yet been served. And that’s how hip hop is, really, isn’t it – we could so easily dismiss it as more of the same, yet if we actually stop to listen and watch we realise there’s a story that needs to be told.
