Abacus Rings Releases Debut Album, ‘Spout’

Set for release on December 5, ‘Spout’ is the debut full length album from alternative rock / pop band, Abacus Rings. The 10 song album will have a video to accompany each track.

Described by Mystic Sons as “bright and vibrant indie-rock”, ‘Spout’ sucks you in from the first note of song number 1, ‘Twilight’. Recorded in part at Q Division and Ugly Duck in Boston and engineered by Matt Tahaney (Jimmy Eat World, Franz Ferdinand) and James Bridges (Juliana Hatfield, Fall Out Boy), Abacus Rings are clearly well-connected, and ‘Spout’ is certainly an impressive passion project first album for a self-described, “after work” band of Boston based professionals.

Comprising Michael and Carolyn Ringel on guitars and vocals, and keys and vocals respectively, along with Douglas “DJ” Johnson on bass, and Bill Kane on drums, the group bring their diverse musical inspirations and life experiences together, and create a sound that is unique to themselves, yet reminiscent of Talking Heads, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, and They Might Be Giants. We mentioned life experiences: these include time spent as a field biologist in the Amazon; a pastry chef at the Charles Hotel; legal counsel for the State Senate Oversight Committee, and a camper among the Himba People, of Namibia. Life Experiences indeed, worthy of capital letters, and certainly providing plenty of songwriting fodder!

The sing-along vibe of the album belies the clearly well honed musical talents of the group, with each track containing multi-layered instrumentals that demand listening to in isolation, before going back and paying attention to the lyrics.

Abacus Rings have already released ‘Martian Baby’ from the album, along with an appropriately space-themed music video, which, they say, will be exactly what a trip to Mars will be like. You can watch it below:
