Tkay Maidza – ‘You Sad’

Born in Zimbabwe but now based in Australia, singer and rapper Tkay Maidza has released her new single, ‘You Sad’, complete with a colourful, dynamic, and maybe a tiny bit sinister, video.

As Tkay leans back in a gloriously vivid field, there’s phones everywhere – even the clouds become phones, in the electric-purple-blue sky. It’s a dreamscape of unreturned text messages, unanswered calls, and a failure to communicate – when you know your messages may as well be directed to the sky as they’re not hitting their mark.

Maidza’s music is a luscious future-soul, with elements of propulsive dance, playful hip-hop, and avant-garde synthpop. ‘You Sad’ comes from her most recent album, ‘Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2’, which followed on from Vol. 1. She’s got a third volume planned as well, and so far they’ve established her as a fiercely eclectic artist who approaches her music without fear, as she dips in and out of reggae, gospel, blues, electronic music, drill, trap, and many other sounds and rhythms that aren’t even genre-specific yet. Standing on the very cutting edge of modern music, Tkay Maidza is someone you’re going to be hearing a lot more of in the not too distant future – and don’t forget where you heard it first.
