Secret Social Club – ‘Gravity’

Secret Social Club, a new band from Southern California, aren’t really into the whole idea of having an exclusive club, but it feels like, with their new single, ‘Gravity’, and accompanying video and comic book, that we’ve been let in on something very special indeed.

Secret Social Club are aware of the power of visual storytelling, and for their comic they have enlisted the talents of Leo Colapietro, whose surreal vision of the future is the perfect match for the band’s vibrant music. The book accomplishes the same end as that of Secret Social Club’s music – the teasing of an alternate universe, just beyond our sight. The secret is, how do we reach this other world?

The members of Secret Social Club have deep roots in California’s pop-rock scene, with frontman Wade Fitzgerald long a member of the local scene, and former drummer Longineu “LP” Parsons was with Yellowcard.

‘Gravity was produced by Matt Good, of post-hardcore band, From First To Last. Good has produced all their previous songs, and together they have all come up with a track that is both playlist-worthy and yet street-tough at the same time – and which should appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners.

The video for ‘Gravity’, directed by Bobby Witewolf, takes that same sense of destabilisation and shifting parameters, and we see Fitzgerald falling into Colapietro’s artwork. He takes a simple trip to a bar, and ends up in a brilliant netherworld. Even before he enters the comic, it’s clear that reality is unravelling around the edges, with video effects and cartoon speech bubbles showing that we’re being allowed a glimpse into a different world. Towards the end of the video, Fitzgerald has convinced himself it’s all a dream. But is it?
