of Montreal – ‘Get God’s Attention By Being An Atheist’ And ‘Polyaneurism’

We’ve got two clips today from of Montreal, who we last saw in 2016, when they were examining “dilemme féminin”, in their single, ‘It’s Different For Girls‘. A lot’s changed in the last 4 years or so for the Athens Georgia pop shapeshifters, whose latest album – astonishingly their 16th – ‘UR FUN’ sees core member Kevin Barnes going it alone, and for the clips for ‘Get God’s Attention By Being An Atheist’ And ‘Polyaneurism’, he’s also ditched his familiar costumes and drag…but they’re replaced by something equally surprising.

The songs are still catchy and the videos are still compellingly watchable. The dance-pop is just as contemporary, with multidimensional lyrics. ‘Get God’s Attention By Being An Atheist’ sounds intriguing right from the title, and it’s not disappointing in the slightest, maintaining the bouncy melodic basslines, glam guitar, and layered harmonies we’ve come to love from of Montreal. It’s still unpredictable and fun, and those who come for the costumes won’t be left out as there’s some rather fun masks used in unexpected ways. Shot in black and white, that’s about as “normal” (what does that mean anyway) as it gets – there’s battles with goatmen, flower people, and a devil priestess. It’s a trippy track and you’ll likely feel exhausted by the end of it, but it’s certainly worth it.

The second clip has a similarly intriguing title, ‘Polyaneurism’, and tells the tale of Mischa The Art Dog, who rose to Insta-Fame, and flirted briefly with the gallery scene. As you do. She found herself surrounded by fakes and phonies, furry hangers on, and inevitably, the end is desperate, devastating loneliness. Poor Mischa! Directed by Clayton Rychlik, it’s a serious look in a fun way at the empty promises of happy-ever-after that come with fame, fortune, and…in the case of Mischa…polyandry.
