Ruark – ‘When You Coming Home’

South Arkansas natives Ruark Inman and his band bring with their music a taste of their home state, with a primarily folk rock feel but flashes of just about every other genre as well. Latest single, ‘When You Coming Home’, is the title track of their debut album, set for release on 31 January, through Bird Drop.

Comprising Ruark playing guitar and vocals, Alexa Joyce on bass and backing vocals, and Jeffery Scott Greer, playing drums and also providing backing vocals, the three bring with them their own idiosyncrasies and influences. Ruark is a music teacher by day, whose musical background is in punk; Alexa is a soul-influenced librarian; Jeffery, when not providing the rhythm for Ruark, works full time on his own music.

‘When You Coming Home’ conjures up visions of a group of friends jamming around a fire in a back country pub. It’s laid back, casual, undemanding, with Ruark taking the reins vocally and the others joining in, supporting, holding their own, yet not taking anything away from the lead. The guitars pleasantly jangle, the drums keep everything organised to a friendly 4/4 time, it’s as homey as can be, which is helped in no small part by the fact that production has been kept to a minimum, giving the song a fresh, almost raw feel. It’s simple, yet it’s sleek and does exactly what it sets out to do – no more no less. Perfect.
