Katmaz ‘Alone (with me)’

For Katmaz’s latest single, ‘Alone (with me)’, the music video was shot in the middle of McCarren Park, in the middle of Williamsburg, the Brooklyn neighbourhood in the centre of New York City’s independent rock music scene. Seems only fitting for someone who is building up for himself a reputation as one of New York’s most enterprising young independent artists.

Williamsburg is the right place for Katmaz. If you’ve ever watched the Hilary Duff TV series ‘Younger’ you’ll know that it has a vibrant community, not just of musicians but all the arts. Katmaz knows this, and has grown accustomed to spending time in the company of fantastically talented people – such as himself of course. Through hard work he’s made himself part of the furniture in Brooklyn’s music underground, and his funky-folk-pop songs are nothing short of exceptional. His playful lyrics at once amuse and cajole; witty and thought-provoking. ‘Alone (With Me)’ is just one example of Katmaz’s skill as an artist – it’s a break-up song a la Beck, and combines a chorus which will compel you to sing along over the distorted synths foundation.

Katmaz wrote and directed the video for ‘Alone (with me)’, handing the photography direction and editing over to Andy Morin, and it’s received nothing but praise since its premiere on PopMatters in late November. Midway through the video, Katmaz is lifted high above McCarren Park, high above Brooklyn even – as he plays guitar in the stars, accompanied by a pair of puppets. They aren’t the real showstoppers however – nor is Katmaz himself – but the Unity Queen Steppers, who by serendipity happened to be in the park the day of the shooting, make an impromptu performance, and back up Katmaz with some incredible moves. How brilliant!
