Amy Bell spoke with Jay (J-Script) and Emma Payne about their new single ‘Hope You’re Well Anyway’ and their plans for next year.
Hey, thank you for talking to Essentially Pop today, how are you?
E: I’m not bad thank you, excited about the single.
J: I’m wicked, been in the studio all day so shattered but buzzing.
For people who don’t know you, tell me a bit about yourselves?
J: My name is Jay, I am 24 years old and I try my best to be a singer haha. I also have two children and I have a new single coming out on the 21st of December with this talented artist.
E: I’m Emma Payne, I’m a singer/songwriter from Daventry, most of my songs tend to be sad haha, so I’m very excited to be a part of an upbeat, energetic track with Jay.
What is your new single called? Promo time!!
J: The song is called ‘Hope You’re Well Anyway’ and it’s awesome!
E: I love the song because its a conversation between two people who have decided to go their separate ways but are wondering what could’ve been if they’d kept trying. I think most people will have had that at some point so I think it’ll be a song that most people can relate to.
Why did you decide to collaborate with Emma Payne and vice versa?
J: I wrote the song and wanted to portraty both sides of a break up and the aftermath, and I wanted the female part to have a sense of innocence about it, so I decided that Emmas voice, would fit perfectly with the direction I wanted the song to go in. We’ve known each other for a few years as we were both performing at a music festival in 2014.
E: I was so excited when Jay played me the song he’d written to see if I wanted to feature on it, as I’m always amazed with what he does with his music and he has produced a few original songs of mine before and I’ve loved what he has done with them.
In 5 words, describe each other’s music?
J for Emma: Relaxing, thought-provoking, fun, sweet and original.
E for Jay: Interesting, in-depth, versatile, raw, authentic
How long did it take to record/produce this single?
J: I spent a lot of time playing with the track after we recorded it, but the recording time took I think around three hours.
E: I spent a week or so learning the song, but was only in the studio for a couple of hours.
Would you say it’s different from your usual songs?
J: Yeah its a lot more Pop than my usual work, so it was out of my comfort zone but I love it.
E: Normally when I write songs its so that I’m not sitting around crying about my problems haha, so pretty much all of my songs are sad so this was a refreshing turn around.
Tell me a bit about the recording/writing process?
J: I wrote the song about a break up I had many many years ago, and was in a reflective mood, at first it was just gonna be me on the song, but I felt it wouild work so much better with Emma on it as well. She seemed to like the song so it was full speed ahead. It was a very fun process and seeing it go from just words on paper to a full song is a feeling that I’ll never get tired of.
E: It was really interesting to watch the song grow from nothing into something that people can listen to and relate to, I say to watch it, as I sat and watched Jay mixing it all and had no idea what was going on haha!
What are you most proud of in your music careers?
J: I think charting in the US was probably my biggest achievement but I was very proud of how well the album did when it dropped.
E: Singing in front of over 1000 people at a local music festival, luckily I was unaware of how many people were in attendence until after the show.
How have your fans reacted to your new music?
J: I’ve been overwelmed by the reception I’ve recieved from my latest album, its been nuts.
E: I haven’t put out much music recently however I have been gigging and everyone who has attended the shows seemed to have a great time.
What are you most proud of in 2019?
J: I had a son, he’s absolutely awesome, he’s definitely the best part of the past few years.
E: I got my 5K running time down to under 30 miniutes, I never thought I’d ever be able to do that but I did haha. I also did my first wedding gig, it felt good to have someone wanting me to sing at their wedding, especially for their first dance!
Will there be any shows coming up for you both?
J: We are both performing at the same show tomorrow evening in Daventry, which is an event ran on the first Tuesday of every month in our hometown, lots of cool musicians and singers there, we love it.
E: I’m performing at my brother’s wedding next year, which I can’t wait for.
What is coming up for you in 2020?
J: I am going on tour in March, we’re hitting all the biggest cities in the UK and I can not wait!
E: I’m going to be recording my first EP which is terrifying because it will be very personal to me, but I’m really excited to finally get some new stuff out.
