An Old Friend – ‘Nesting’

An Old Friend is a well-oiled machine, the talented band ably supporting lead singer Cody Kohler’s vocals in their latest release, ‘Nesting’.

The independent rock band aren’t showy or overt but they certainly know what they’re doing, and Kohler’s vocals carry with them an emotional reach that others could only hope for. New single ‘Nesting’ brings with it the same melodic and rhythmic inventiveness of their previous releases, as well as the same lyrical confidence.

The Long Island group draw from a rich vein of punk, hardcore, and emo, but while they display hints of this in their music, songs like ‘Nesting’ show they have a style all of their own, which is difficult to categorise, being at once ferocious, yet at the same time somewhat comforting; confrontational, but compelling. The listener is drawn in and the band is loathe to let them go anytime soon.

An Old Friend hails from Long Island, and they proudly draw from the punk, hardcore, and emo tradition that their region is famous for. Echoes of adventurous bands like Explosions In The Sky and Pianos Become The Teeth (who they’ve played with) are apparent in their sound. But as songs like “Nesting” demonstrate, they’ve developed a style all their own, and one that can’t be comfortably categorized. An Old Friend are at the same time ferocious – yet comforting. Their songs confront, yet also they compel the listener. It’s a progressive sound which draws you in and doesn’t easily let go.

The video goes some way to capture their live act. An Old Friend are shown performing in a haunted house, with the occupant chased into a forest. Eventually he’s forced to confront the truth about his worst fears…
