Six Quick Questions Plus One More With Keywest’s Andrew Kavanagh

Irish pop folk band Keywest formed in Dublin Ireland in 2011. Comprising Andrew Kavanagh, Andrew Glover, James Lock, and Harry Sullivan, the group recently signed to Marshall Records in Europe, and Eleven Seven Records in America, through which they’ve released their new album, ‘Ordinary Superhero’.

Known their strong stage presence and powerful live shows, Keywest honed their performance skills in the busking scene of Dublin’s Grafton Street, and Shop Street in Galway. Keywest start their Ordinary Superhero Tour tomorrow night in Belfast, working their way around Ireland and the UK for the rest of this month, before heading into mainland Europe during November.

Lisa first discovered Keywest one chilly December afternoon while they were busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street, back in 2014. She’s now had the pleasure of asking lead singer Andrew “Kav” Kavanagh six quick questions – plus another one.

I first came across you guys back in 2014 while you were busking on Grafton Street. How would you compare those days to now, is it easier or harder, what are the main differences that have happened to your lives since signing with Marshall?

It’s definitely tougher. It’s more complicated and time consuming but then we’re also reaching a larger audience so it’s just part of it.

Your new album ‘Ordinary Superhero’ has just been released. What makes someone an ordinary superhero?

An ordinary person, getting by when it’s tough. A single parent, a careworker, a sufferer of mental illness or physical illness.

What’s the recording process been like? How long did it take from writing to completion and what’s your favourite track on the album and why?

It took a month to record…We don’t normally get the opportunity to record in a consistent block so that was great. And my favourite track is ‘Wear Your Love’. It encapsulates what I wanted to say about the early stages of falling in love.
