Zaritza’s latest release, ‘Slot Machine’ is an empowering affirmation from a woman who knows exactly what she wants and isn’t afraid to do what it takes to get it.
Originally from a remote Russian village, Zaritza moved to the US to pursue her musical ambitions. Her name is a blend of two Russian words: “zarya”, which describes the Golden Hour, that intense time of bright light that appears just before sunrise or sunset, and “tsartiza”, meaning queen. And indeed, she is a golden queen, her musical training in classical piano, traditional folk dance, and ballet, and her connection to Russian composers and European electronic artists, as well as her love for contemporary pop music, have all contributed to Zaritza’s musical style. Add to that her opening date for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, her TED Talk on Rachmaninoff, and her stunning 2017 self-titled album, and you get some idea of just how radiantly talented Zaritza really is.
‘Slot Machine’, with its hypnotic beats and compelling synths, is passionate and erotic, intoxicating and enticing, with Zaritza’s vocals summoning the listener like the sirens of old. To our doom, that’s unsure, but irresistible, certainly.
Directed by Devin Schiro, the accompanying music video is racy, provocative, and eminently sexy. The ‘Slot Machine’ of the title is exactly what you’d expect, an allusion to the sexual act, with Zaritza returning rewards in return for fitting repayment. Everything about the clip is golden: costumes, setting, movement and Zaritza herself – caught up in a wave of modern dance and movement, and putting her ballet training to good use.
Zaritza’s aim with ‘Slot Machine’ is to encourage and empower female sexual confidence. She says,
“I believe it’s important for women to be comfortable in their own skin, to come out of their shell and feel empowered to express their sexuality, without being judged.”
