Los Angeles band Wild Wing is the coming together of four lifelong friends, originally from the San Fernando Valley. The quartet blend together a variety of genres, including but not limited to country, synth-punk, and garage rock, with their lyrics peppered with political satire. Their fourth release, ‘New Futures’, is set to come out on June 21. We preview the track ‘Me ‘n Mine’.
Citing influences from the likes of Dead Kennedys, DEVO, and Neil Young you feel you might have an idea of what Wild Wing’s sound is going to be like before you hear the first note. But then you listen and realise that they’re not as predictable as you think: originally they could be classed as “cow punk”, their sound was tempered by an Americana styling. With ‘New Futures’ they’re showcasing a new style – confrontational without becoming jarring. Wild Wing have built up a sizeable fan following and a reputation as local cult heroes by playing hundreds of shows across the region.
‘Me ‘n Mine’, from ‘New Futures’, has that distinct SoCal sound, but with a slightly discordant edge. It’s all furious drums, slashing guitars, and vocals coloured a little bit like the 70s. You can hear Neil Young’s influence in their sound, drawling and languid vocals which are instantly appealing.
The quartet comprises David Gantz, Max Garland, Zach Miller, and Theo Cohn, and the four have grown up together, and as a result instinctively know inside and out how best to combine their respective talents. They played music in each other’s garages and lounge rooms, and eventually, with their musical tastes evolving together to the point where they realised they had to form a proper band. They played shows wherever and whenever they could, in church basements right up to packed venues, and in so doing have built up a great repertoire and have released an incredible catalogue of music.
‘New Futures’ was written, engineered, produced, and recorded by Wild Wing themselves, in their studio, which, staying true to their roots, is located in the San Fernando Valley.
