MAAD – ‘BAAD’

New York born, LA based pop-soul singer MAAD is also a DJ as well as a recording artist, which is reflected in her sound, which while contemporary, contain homages to the legendary sisters of the past, such as Donna Summer, and Diana Ross. Her new single, ‘BAAD’, is a high-octane RnB/pop piece, with a clip as “BAAD” as the song itself.

Spiked with enough synths to keep it pop, and driven with chunks of bass to give it the RnB edge, ‘BAAD’ is sleek and sexy, with a clip to match. MAAD has brought on board some of her frequent collaborators to lend their hands to the production, including Raleigh Dunn, who also serves as songwriter, producer, and co-founder of THEVAMP collective/indie label, as well as Amsterdam-based electronic artist Midas Hutch, whose 2018 single ‘I’ll Go There’, features stunning vocals by MAAD and engineering by Dunn. They’ve given ‘BAAD’ a  club-floor bounce, which melds perfectly with MAAD’s sultry soul vibe. While modern in every way, there’s still a certain vintage element to the track.
The video for ‘BAAD’ sees direction by another of MAAD’s frequent collaborators, Paulo Berberan, who directed the clip for her song, ‘New Religion’. For ‘BAAD’, we see MAAD playing the role of a video girl selling fantasies over the Internet. The clip showcases female empowerment while examining the state of the collective human social and economic behaviour.
