Gold Light & Snakemusk – ‘One Thing After Another’

Gold Light & Snakemusk continue the long tradition of male/female duos in Americana and folk music, forming their musical alliance in the spring of 2017, both previously having performed and created music separately.

Joe Chang (Gold Light) and Beau Campolong (Snakemusk) realised they shared a love of country tinged songs, and are set to release their debut combined album of 9 tracks, ‘Shadows In The Shallows’, on May 10.

‘One Thing After Another’ opens with Joe singing in that time-honoured tradition of steel-stringed slide guitar, and a long, drawn out twang to his voice, setting the scene for a forlorn tale of woe. Beau’s harmonies come in about halfway through the first minute, sweet and light, the perfect accompaniment to Joe’s tenor. Her vocals retain the same rich sadness as Joe’s, the pair’s partnership reminiscent of that of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash – with Joe taking the lead, but Beau providing a support that makes the song a whole. ‘One Thing After Another’ feels timeless; it’s raw and unpolished, there’s a sense that it’s been recorded live and not over-produced: this adds to its ageless quality. The song itself sounds as if it’s a traditional folk melody, while it could have been recorded as recently as today or a hundred years ago.

‘Shadows In The Shallows’ is out on May 10 through Bailey Park Records, and can be pre-ordered from Bandcamp. Find Gold Light & Snakemusk online on their official website, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
