Hybrid – ‘Hold Your Breath’

UK band Hybrid have been making music for movies throughout their two decade career, scoring more than 20 films, including ‘Vice’, ‘Domino’, and ‘Billionaire Ransom’. It should therefore come as no surprise that they understand how to use music to amplify their storytelling, and match sound with visuals. They’ve certainly put this experience to the test for the deeply immersive clip to their latest single, ‘Hold Your Breath’, which plays like a Hollywood blockbuster for a massive eight minutes.

But ‘Hold Your Breath’ demands a dramatic video. It’s all action all the time: beats, synths, lyrics, all require cinematic representation for the clip. It’s certainly the standout track on their fifth album, ‘Light Of The Fearless’, and demonstrates the flexibility of the group’s sound.

When making the video for ‘Hold Your Breath’, Hybrid have called on some very impressive collaborators, including Academy Award winning director John Stephenson, and actor James Purefoy, best known for his work on HBO’s ‘Rome’, ‘Solomon Kane’, and ‘Altered Carbon’, who plays the clip’s “Mr Black”.

Hybrid are Mike and Charlotte Truman, and they’re the true stars of this clip, playing a couple of renegades wanting to pull off a heist against massive odds. They thwart Mr Black and his evil plans with a cunning break-in. The clip was edited by Mike Truman, who also provided the visual effects, while Charlotte wrote the screenplay and produced. Clearly their talents go well beyond just making electronic music, and it would come as no surprise to anyone if their next project was a film.
