Future West Is ‘Human’ Just Like You

Future West is the performance name of London based Irish multi-instrumentalist and producer, Francis Watters. His latest track, ‘Human’, is a synth-heavy, electronic track, evoking Gary Numan, 80s Bowie, and Arctic Monkeys circa 2009-2012.

The lyrics are very thought provoking; Francis points out that we are all human – we might have small differences, but deep down we’re the same under the skin. He very cleverly manages to fit a vast quantity of lyrics into the music, becoming, effectively, an instrument themselves:

And so I say, We’re all human after all we say and do.

Would you care to be human too? I’m like you, a human fool.

Sonically, as said earlier, we’re reminded of Gary Numan and Bowie; it’s the electronica that gives this impression, with Francis’ voice having an electronic quality that fits perfectly with the music.

Speaking of the track, Francis said,

It’s a song about not falling victim to the un-realistic standards that most social media platforms/influencers portray. We all fall into them pits sometimes where we wish our lives were more like something we’ve seen online or in a magazine and this track is just a reminder that nobody is perfect and that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes.

‘Human’ is accompanied by a music video which was co-created by Francis Watters with Johnny Stemp, and it’s as thought-provoking as the song itself, with the focus solely on Francis, who is seated against a black wall. Objects such as a banana, a hair dryer, and a small succulent plant are presented to him in turn, as he sings about us all being human with humour, and a little bit of pathos.
