Hunt Sales Memorial – ‘One Day’ And ‘Angel Of Darkness’

Hunt Sales has grown up in show business. He’s the son of legendary comedian and actor, Soupy Sales, and he’s played drums on stage since he was a teenager. He’s collaborated with the likes of Iggy Pop – he played drums on ‘Lust For Life’, and Todd Rundgren’s Top 20 classic, ‘We Gotta Get You A Woman’. He’s played with Bootsy Collins, and was one of the founding members of 80s experimental band, Tin Machine, which was fronted by David Bowie.

After all that, the 68 year old rocker has put together his first ever solo album – his public debut as a songwriter and vocalist, and on ‘Get Your Shit Together’, he sings about hardship and loss, love and passion, addiction and perseverance, with candour and absolute vigour. Co-produced by Hunt and Bruce Watson, of Fat Possum Records, it’s testimony to his hard-earned wisdom, and proof that he’s a fighter who’ll never go down.

‘One Day’ is a stinging, battered and bruised clip, with Hunt’s gritty vocals epitomising the struggles he’s been through. It’s autobiographical, talking about his much missed parents, and longing for the day when he will meet them once again. ‘One Day’ is the lament of a man who has known struggle, loneliness, and pain, but he’s nonetheless determined to rise above it all.

‘Angel Of Darkness’, is conversely somewhat more of a rollicking ride. A lot less dark than ‘One Day’, it’s got a feel that comes somewhere between Bowie and the Rolling Stones; bluesy and drawled. Hunt cuts an imposing figure, with his gold-capped teeth, black hat, and eyepatch. In the video for ‘Angel Of Darkness’, he’s confronting a blonde woman who doesn’t seem to care what he does. He makes the effort to let her know though that it’s all about her. He “hates her as much as he loves her”.
