All Is Not As It Seems With ‘I Really See You’, First Track From The Bobbleheads New Album, ‘Myths And Fables’

Formed in San Francisco back in 2003, self-described power-pop band The Bobbleheads will release their new album, ‘Myths And Fables’, on March 29. First song and video is the deceptively peppy ‘I Really See You’.

The Bobbleheads make upbeat guitar driven music, which should come as no surprise as the band contains two guitarists, John Ashfield – playing on his custom made 12 string Rickenbacker – and Rob Harford. The pair share vocals, while the remainder of the quartet is made up of Pat Ennis on bass, and Drummer Rob Jacobs.

‘Myths And Fables’ was recorded between spring 2017 and summer 2018, in San Francisco, and was produced and mixed by Doug Hilsinger, who worked on their previous release, ‘Make Yourself Happy’, from 2014.

Listening to ‘I Really See You’, sonically conjures up an image of the long hazy crazy days of summer: lazing on the beach, or driving around on the open highways of Southern California. But the lyrics suggest otherwise: they speak of a relationship that outwardly looks to be going just fine, but underneath it all, it’s clear it’s not going anywhere. In a way therefore, the music reflects this; by showing that it’s not all that it seems.

Don’t judge by external appearances. There’s something about the music of The Bobbleheads; there’s a certain uneasy edge to it, and we call to mind the music of Irish band, The Thrills, whose sound was also upbeat and peppy, yet lyrically concealed a deeper, darker message, such as in ‘Whatever Happened To Corey Haim?’, ‘Big Sur‘, and  ‘The Irish Keep Gate-Crashing‘.

John Ashfield was the founding member of the group, and has primarily been the band’s songwriter, but for ‘Myths And Fables’, he’s let go a little, and many of the songs are either co-written, or are composed by the band. It’s a new experience for both the band and the fans, who will have the chance to check out their new sound at The Art Boutiki, San Jose, on April 19. You can find out more and get tickets here.

‘Myths And Fables’ will be released digitally on all major streaming platforms, as well as CD and limited edition white vinyl through The Bobbleheads’ official store.
