ROMA’s Yalitza Aparicio Reacts To Leading Actress Academy Award Nomination

Yalitza Aparicio, star of Alfonso Cuarón’s film ‘ROMA’, has issued a reaction in response to her nomination in the Best Leading Actress category at this year’s Academy Awards.

Yalitza wowed everyone with her breakout role in ‘ROMA’, which itself has been nominated in a total of 10 categories, including Best Picture, and Best Director. Yalitza’s co-star Marina De Tavira has also been nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actress.

‘ROMA’ is the first acting role for Aparicio, who was born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Mexico. She was cast in the role after attending an open casting in her home town.

Yalitza’s statement is as follows:

From the very first casting call to this morning, my ROMA journey has been extraordinary.

As a daughter of a domestic worker and an indigenous woman myself, I am proud this movie will help those of us who feel invisible be seen. I am eternally grateful to the Academy for recognizing ROMA and am honored to be part of Alfonso’s vision. Congratulations to Alfonso, the entire cast and crew, and my dear friend Marina De Tavira.

I am so humbled and honored. Thank You.

‘ROMA’, which is avaiable to stream on Netflix, is the most personal project to date from Academy Award®-winning Director and Writer Alfonso Cuarón, known for his films, ‘Gravity’, ‘Children Of Men’, and ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’. ‘ROMA’ folows young domestic worker Cleo, played by Yalitza Aparicio, employed by a family in the middle class neighbourhood of Roma, Mexico City. The film is an artful love letter from Cuarón to the women who raised him, and he draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy, amid the political turmoil of the 1970s.
