Dean Maywood – ‘Jane’

Irish singer songwriter Dean Maywood is set to release his new single, ‘Jane’, on January 25. The track is the lead single from his forthcoming EP, due out in May.

Although born in Drogheda, Dean Maywood’s current base is in Donegal, in the beautiful west of Ireland. The town is dominated by the Bluestack Mountains, and the music which comes from the area is closely tied to that which sprang up in another beautifully mountainous area, the Appalachians, in the US.
Bluegrass, Roots, and Americana music are all descended from Irish traditional music, so it should come as no surprise that Maywood’s music is more than just a little bit tinged with the sounds of those mountains.
The primarily acoustic guitar track has a definite Americana flavour, and is a great example of what to expect from the rest of the EP. Accompanied by a crisp female backing vocal – perhaps it’s Jane? – Maywood’s style reminds us of early Fleetwood Mac, and perhaps The Eagles. In any case, there’s a very retro feel as well as the Americana; it’s more than just pleasant, it’s very more-ish, and puts us in a good mood about what to expect from the EP.
We’re not the only ones to think so about Maywood. Irish music Bible, Hot Press, described his debut single, ‘Oileán NaMarbh’, as “an absorbing listen”, and “a heart breaking, hushed hymn, full of passion and pathos.” It’s no less the case in his latest single, which pays homage to the 70s, the golden era of rock, pop, and country. Maywood counts as among his influences the likes of Neil Young, John Prine, and Jackson Browne. His music has a story-telling feel to them, and is inspired by the stories of people in his home town, and he manages to find beauty in even the smallest of things.
Dean Maywood has spent the past three years travelling all over Ireland, in order to get his music in front of as wide an audience as he can. He’s supported a wide range of great artists from Ireland, the US, and the wider world, and seen his fanbase grow with his live performances, which allow him to show off his full emotions, empathetic prose, and haunting storytelling.
You can find out more about Dean Maywood online on his Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and SoundCloud. ‘Jane’ will be available to stream and download from all digital media platforms from January 25.
