Jedward’s New Single Takes Us To A ‘Perfect Wonderland’

It’s been a long time coming but Jedward’s new single, ‘Perfect Wonderland’ is out today. The first release from the Irish duo in nearly two years, the track is EDM influenced pop with a catchy beat underpinning it, and a characteristically positive message of hope.

‘Perfect Wonderland’ is the follow up to ‘Oxygen’, released in January last year. The new single is the 10th track to be released by the Dublin twins that they’ve written, composed, and produced themselves, and released on their Planet Jedward label. The song opens with a simple keyboard melody which continues throughout. This is soon joined by a short repeat of the refrain “let me take you to a perfect Wonderland”, before launching into the chorus.

It’s a song of encouragement, with affirmations such as “close your eyes but don’t overthink/and never forget the possibilities”, and “don’t overstress, let your mind release/and teleport yourself anywhere you want to be” serving as a mantra.

John and Edward’s vocals are closely aligned but distinct enough that you can work out which twin is singing what part. It’d be interesting to know if they are each singing the lines they’ve written.

Towards the middle of the track the different vocal layers coalesce, the sibling harmonies creating a very pleasing sound, with John mostly taking the lead and Edward providing at least one backing vocal.

The instrumentation initially seems quite simplistic but a more thorough examination shows it to contain several distinct percussive elements in addition to the repeated keyboard phrase, scattered drum beats, and strong synths. Listen out for the beat drop at around the 2 minutes 45 mark: it’s clear that Jedward listen to a lot of electronic music, and blend that into their sound – but it’s not possible to put them into any particular musical box.

Jedward first started performing ‘Perfect Wonderland’ in their live shows way back in 2014, and it’s been a firm fan favourite for all that time, and has definitely deserved a commercial release. It comes ahead of their long-awaited fourth album, set to come out in early 2019, which they recorded in Los Angeles in the first half of this year. Given that ‘Perfect Wonderland’ is nearly five years old – and is, to use Jedward’s words, “an absolute banger” – it’ll be interesting to see what their new songs will sound like.

‘Perfect Wonderland’ is available to stream and download from iTunes, Amazon, Google Playstore, Spotify, and Deezer.

Be sure to check out Jedward online on their official website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and YouTube.
