‘Straighten Up And Fly Right’: Classic Nat King Cole Track Latest From Jeff Goldblum And The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, Featuring Imelda May And Till Brönner

With his take on the 1943 Nat King Cole standard, ‘Straighten Up And Fly Right’, Jeff Goldblum And The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra have today released the latest track from their upcoming album, ‘The Capitol Studios Sessions’. The new single features vocals by Irish singer songwriter Imelda May, as well as German Jazz musician, Till Brönner on trumpet.

Speaking to Entertainment.ie back in May while in Ireland promoting his film, ‘Jurassic World’, Goldblum waxed lyrical about Imelda May:

“I just made a jazz record this last week, and you know who sang a couple of songs on it? Imelda May.”

He continued: “She’s spectacular. I think she’s the most loveliest creature on earth and the most talented musician I’ve ever heard”, before referring to her as an “international treasure.”

The track is the third to be released from the album, after ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’, featuring Haley Reinhart, and ‘Cantaloupe Island’, both of which came out last month. Imelda May’s vocals are absolutely sublime, ably supported by the band’s backing vocalists. About the halfway mark, Brönner comes in, with his jazz trumpet the perfect accompaniment. With Goldblum providing exactly enough piano – not too much, but not so little that he’s completely outshone – it’s an ensemble which works together like they were born for it.

Jeff Goldblum and The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra release ‘The Capitol Studios Sessions’ on 9th November 2018 on Decca, and perform at Cadogan Hall on Sat 17 November and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club on Thurs 22 November as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. If you can’t get tickets at either of the London dates (and apparently they’re are already sold out), there’s a further date in Paris, on 18 November, at Le Trianon. Tickets and further information are available here.
