Man Made Time – ‘Insanity’

Man Made Time comprises singer/songwriter/producer Hillary Grace, and Albert James Babanian, who’s a synth player/songwriter/engineer and producer. The clip for their latest track ‘Insanity’ sees the duo from Los Angeles, California, tackle their inner demons, addiction, and anxiety with an undeniable honesty.

Taking their influence from the likes of 80s and 90s pop/rock and modern day artists such as Phantogram, La Roux, and Ellie Goulding, the pair started by having impromptu jam sessions in the parking lot of a coffee shop. This led to studio sessions, and to where they are now – their single, ‘Sail Away’ premiered in Huffington Post, and their most recent single, ‘Fool’, saw them gain even more fans. Not bad at all.

In the video for ‘Insanity’, we see Hillary waking up to discover she’s locked in the back seat of a car, which is being driven by Albert. He’s playing the song, berating Hillary with her own beautiful lyrics, which are accompanied by an acoustic instrumental. The camera pans between them, and we’re not sure what’s going on – but towards the end we realise she’s locked in the car for her own good: at the same time she also concludes that she cannot escape, and therefore releases herself of the burden of trying to fight. It’s a curiously beautiful song and video, which compels us to listen more deeply to the lyrics. Margos Margossian, was the creative director of photography on the video, and is a long-time collaborator of Man Made Time. Her idea was to portray a metaphorical interpretation of what the inside of a suffering mind might look like. With the car being driven by someone who’s not interested in where you want to go, he’s done exactly what he set out to do. The moral to the story in this situation is to watch, and not fight, but nonetheless buckle yourself in for the bumpy journey.
