ash.ØK – ‘Holding Sand’

We’ve covered releases by Pennsylvanian producer ash.ØK in the past, and we love the sound he gives to his productions, no matter with whom he’s collaborated.

His debut album, ‘The Unraveled’, amalgamates various styles and moods, incorporating elements from dance music, world music, progressive rock, modern pop, and left-field experimental sounds. He’s included more than two dozen artists on his album, from reggaeton star Conkarah, virtuoso Indian percussionist Jomy George, and the raucous, pan-ethnic West Philadelphia Orchestra. His latest track, ‘Holding Sand’ combines electronic and live sounds, with an eastern and orchestral vibe, as he teams up with internationally renowned session cellist and erhuist, Tina Guo.

Guo has performed at the ACMA, Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Grammy Awards, MTV Movie Awards and performances alongside Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, Chris Isaak, Ariana Grande, and Michael McDonald, among dozens of others.

The video has been directed by Ife Adeniji and Sonny Bonoho (IFE+BONOHO) and is more of a short film than a music clip. Set in days of old, it’s essentially a love story between a knight and a fair maiden. They set out to consumate their love with a secret marriage in the forest, but are interrupted by attackers who steal the girl away while leaving the knight unconscious on a bridge. He finds her captors, and leaves one for dead, but sadly while he’s rescuing his love, she’s stabbed by the other attacker. It’s a sad end to a fairytale, but it’s the perfect addition to the gorgeous cello music.
