Originally from New Orleans, Big Sam’s Funky Nation is making a name for themselves around the country. Their music is a blend of jazz, rock, and hip-hop, to which they add their own Southern charm.
The group comprises Big Sam on trombone and vocals, Drew “Da Phessah” Baham on trumpet and vocals, Jerry “JBlakk” Henderson on bass, Keenan “Butta Cream” McRae on guitar, Alfred “Sgt Gutta” Jordan on drums, and Kendrick Marshall on keyboards.
Big Sam’s Funky Nation have released six albums, starting in 2004, with ‘Birth Of A Nation’. Their sixth was relased earlier this year, ‘Songs In The Key Of Funk, Vol One’. It’s been declared by critics “the heart and soul of American culture”, with its array of 70s, 80s, and today’s funk.
The ‘Pokechop’ video opens with the band performing with their typical high energy on a street corner, in front of a bright yellow door. It’s a funky, groovy track, showing New Orleans in its best light – fun, bright, and musical.
