The Soft Underground – ‘Morning World’ Is A Post Punk Delight

The Soft Underground are from the outskirts of Manhattan, in New York City, but nevertheless are feted as modern successors to the bands of Seattle’s alt scene, from the 90s.

Comprising Andrew McCarthy on drums and guitarist Charlie Hickey, The Soft Underground formed in 2010, with the duo writing, performing and recording original music, by way of introducing guest vocalists for each track. Guests have included Nick Redmond (Star & Micey), Brannon Barnett (The StoneCoats) and Rick Steff (Lucero, The Afghan Whigs, Hank Williams Jr.).

The Soft Underground released their debut album, ‘Lost In Translation’, in 2015, and received high praise from the likes of The Big Takeover, Music Street Journal, and Alt Nation, the latter who quickly identified their dynamic combo of solid hooks and rock riffs, noting the potential for radio ready singles.

‘Morning World’ is their upcoming album, set for release on 27 July. It’s a far more personal album, with the rock still there. The recording took over two years, with the duo making sure that everything met their exacting standards. The album has been described as alt art rock, and compared to Deftones, Father John Misty and Stone Temple Pilots.

‘Rachel’, the opening song on the 11 track album, is grungy rock at it’s finest, a post punk delight that hangs somewhere between jungle electronica, shoegaze, and punk. Whatever the genre, it’s damn fine music.
