Rick Trevino first burst onto the music scene in 1993 with his debut single, ‘Just Enough Rope’, with versions in both Spanish and English. The Texas native has had an extensive career, where he’s showcased his Mexican heritage with his take on country music. He demonstrates this love in his latest single, ‘I Am A Mexican’, in order to shed a light on problems that Mexicans, both resident in and outside the US, face on a day to day basis.
Rick has charted a total of fourteen times on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, as well as reaching the number 1 spot in 1996, for his single, ‘Running Out Of Reasons To Run’. He’s also received a Grammy in 1999 for Best Mexican American Music Performance, in his role as a member of Los Super Seven.
‘I Am A Mexican’ is an homage to Trevino’s Mexican roots, as well as a statement about how Mexican immigrant workers are viewed and treated, and the problems they face. The video is very simple yet quite effective, and both song and clip also feature legendary accordionist, and seven-time Grammy winner, Flaco Jiminez. Jiminez is also a native Texan, and with his accordion adds much to the Mexican feel of the track.
