Adrian Conner – ‘Airport Coffee’

Adrian Conner is a very busy lady. Familiar to regular readers of Essentially Pop as one half of duo Beaux Cheveux (with Clementine providing the other half), Adrian is also the lead guitarist in an all female AC/DC cover band, Hell’s Belles. Now Adrian has a solo EP coming out, ‘SpazKitty’, on which she’s not only performed but also written, produced, edited and engineered. Adrian is certainly the definition of an independent artist and we’re not even going to pretend it’s a coincidence that her new single is named ‘Airport Coffee’, because she likely needs a few coffees (not necessarily airport ones) to get through all she manages to do.

‘SpazKitty’ is Conner’s ninth release, and ‘Airport Coffee’ is the second track to come from it, after an earlier single, ‘Belligerent’, a feminist battle cry which in being symbolic of the struggles Adrian has faced in her career is totally on point in these days of #MeToo.

‘Airport Coffee’ sees Adrian tackling another issue face on, battling against corporate greed. With lyrics such as “Doesn’t matter what side you’re on, they both sold us out” and “Over the years the one percent got the joke” and “You pay the tax while they skip out”. It’s a dark and sobering observation of the financial world we’re all compelled to steer our way through, whether we like it or not. Just like an airport coffee, often burnt and nasty tasting, we keep buying it and drinking it because there’s little choice otherwise.

If you’re familiar with the videos from Beaux Cheveux then you’ll know what to expect from the ‘Airport Coffee’ clip, with its overlays, blending, and green screen. The funky track is highlighted by the washed out colours, and heavy film grain, and we’re also treated to a glorious bass solo from Adrian in the middle. Flashes of the band and sequences of Adrian throwing ten dollar bills about complete the stark clip.
