Where Are We – ‘Not My President’

Christopher Ian Brooker, who performs as Where Are We, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia, and has been producing and releasing music for over a decade. His latest track, ‘Not My President‘, is a contemporary electronic protest song, with a unique blend of indie rock and EDM.

With a diverse skill set and songwriting roots which have led him down an unusual path, ‘Not My President’ is certainly a very interesting project for Were Are We, who has been for the past few years collaborating with filmmaker Tim Reis. This collaboration includes writing and producing scores for several of Reis’s films, and their most recent is Where Are We’s music video for ‘Not My President’.

The track has a vibe which reminds listeners of Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys – but there’s something more. In Where Are We’s own words,

“the releases range from hypnotic adventures into electronic dissection, to soft-spoken lilts blooming out of acoustic instruments and reverberated voices.”

He records and mixes all his material himself, thereby maintaining creative freedom to choose his own direction, and if he so desires, to take another path entirely.

The video for ‘Not My President’ opens with a faceless character turning off his 8am alarm. Initially his form reflects the cosmos; gradually however his entire being is filled with the weight of the world, and that’s reflected on his body, with breaking news, images of President Trump, and other media broadcast on his skin. It’s a metaphor for the worries that beset him: eventually he strips off all his clothes, revealing the amorphous character in all its glory. He takes off to the woods where he burns everything in his wallet, and gradually regains his previous cosmic state. The music is uptempo and enticing, and when heard alongside the video, becomes a compelling argument for going off grid.
