The Winter Sounds – ‘Earth After a Thunderstorm’

‘Heartbeats’, by The Winter Sounds, received praise for its gorgeous, hallucinatory video, from Huffington Post, Paste, AXS TV, and of course, us here at Essentially Pop. Now Patrick Keenan and filmmaker Zbanski Kino are back in the forests of Estonia, for the clip to the band’s follow up song, ‘Earth After A Thunderstorm’.

Unlike ‘Heartbeats’, which saw Keenan and Kino together alone among the tall trees, they’re joined by a one-armed mannequin, who, over the course of the video, almost comes to life.

‘Maximum Reality’ is named for a concept outlined by Immanuel Kant, and the hyper-coloured videos take us to a dream like world and challenges our perceptions of real and fantasy.

Produced by Derek Garten, known for his work with Jewel, and Jason Kingsland (Band Of Horses, and Deerhunter), the album perfects their blend of folk, synth, classic rock, and dreampop. Keenan is the star of the video, however it’s the mannequin who steals the show, with the various poses and angles giving the effect that she is an actual participant. The clip is sad and humorous at the same time, as we see Patrick take the mannequin for a drive – after having first dressed her and had a little dance – has a picnic, plays cards with, and holds her hand. It’s a love story with a twist.
