The Mayan Factor – ‘Warflower’

When The Mayan Factor’s lead singer Ray Schuler – known as Ray Ray to their fans – died unexpectedly in 2011, it wasn’t expected that the Baltimore band would carry on. They did go on hiatus in the wake of Ray’s death, but eventually answered the pleas of the international legion of devotees, and they reunited. Now the surviving members of The Mayan Factor have come together, to release archival material featuring Ray Ray’s performances, and also to create new music. Their song, ‘Warflower’, falls into the former category, and is a song first recorded by the band with Ray Ray back in 2003.

Without a lead singer The Mayan Factor could easily have called it a day, but powerfully-voiced Lenny Cerzosie, from the hard rock band, Le Projet, stepped into the vacant spot. The Mayan Factor has grown in stature, reputation, and accomplishment since the early days of the millennium. But even with a new singer, much remains the same: The Mayan Factor continue to create a bewitching, wholly immersive amalgam of Seventies-inspired prog, grunge, metal, and pure experimental music, and bravely address difficult subjects in their poetic lyrics.

‘Warflower’ is paired with a disorienting video, the camera zooming along an urban street, the background muted so as to further confuse the viewer. The undulation and the speed of the camera works well with the song, conveying an uneasiness.
