Queens of the Stone Age – ‘The Way You Used To Do’

The video for Queens Of The Stone Age’s ‘The Way You Used To Do’ has been described by Billboard as “a Satanic Fever Dream.” The first single from their album, ‘Villains’, it was originally released exclusively to Apple Music, and topped the Billboard charts. It’s now also been released on Vevo, and has almost cracked the million mark in its first week.

Rolling Stone describes the clip as “grisly and jumping”, and the track shows front man Josh Homme in the role of a charming, yet terrifying almost cult leader. He says the concept behind the video simultaneously pays tribute to the legendary Cab Calloway and the film Helzapoppin’. Opening with Homme entering a building, he says to to the viewers, “Wait ’til you see this deal man! It’ll blow your mind!”.

Pentagrams, altars, pacts with the devil, are dropped in casually while Homme dances around in tailcoats and other gorgeous costumes, his rockabilly quiff the perfect match for the music. The track works best when listened to through headphones – it’s a lush instrumental soundscape that requires each ear to concentrate separately.

Speaking about the video, Homme says,

“I fully realize that may be a little more than some are open to, and that’s perfectly fine with me. There’s the door.”

‘The Way You Used To Do’ and the album ‘Villains’ is available to stream and download from iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, and the Matador Records Store (where you can also buy the album on CD and vinyl).
