Alvvays – ‘Dreams Tonite’

The new music video for ‘Dreams Tonite’, the latest release for Toronto based indie dream pop band, Alvvays, brings together a tale of isolation and loss in a pastel daydream.

Centred around the 1967 Expo, held in Montreal, Quebec, the exposition was a true accomplishment of the modern world, and attracted over 50 million attendees from all over the world, which, given the entire population of Canada was a mere 20 million at the time, shows just how huge an event it was.

The video features lots of archival footage, interwoven with shots giving the impression that the band are actually performing at and attending the Expo.Muted colours in the added scenes in the video add to the 60s authenticity.

‘Dreams Tonite’ is from Alvvays’ album, ‘Antisocialites’, and the names of both song and album feature in the lines:
On the lead guitar
Said you’d go to work
In the waking hour
In fluorescent light
Antisocialites watch a wilting flower
The laid back, almost ethereal voice, and a psych vibe come together to make the track not just memorable but repeatable. Add to that the catchy refrain of “If I saw you on the street, would I have you in my dreams tonite?” and airy backing vocals and altogether ‘Dreams Tonite’ is somewhat sad, and very moving.
