Originally from the suburbs of Paris, but now living in London, indie pop/electronic duo The Penelopes were formed by Axel Basquiat and Vincent T, and have a distinct filmic quality about them.

Their new eight track EP, ‘Leave Them All Behind’,  evokes the sound of the 80s and 90s, with strong synths and drums.

‘Leave Them All Behind’ is of five tracks with three remixes (Mighty Mouse’s remix of ‘Mulholland Drive’, which he made while taking time out from his side project, Du Tonc), as well as by Swedish producer Blende (‘Roses’), and a gorgeous remix of ‘Time To Shine’ from US duo, Night Drive, and was released on August 4. It openly declares the duo’s influences, which include the likes of Cocteau Twins, David Bowie, Nick Cave, and Iggy Pop. The influence of the last two is especially clear in Axel’s gravelly vocals, while the “spacey” synths very much seem inspired by Bowie.

The Penelopes have made their name with their remixes of the music of Lana Del Rey, Pet Shop Boys, and Alt-J, among others, and have moved on to composing music for film.

Lead track, ‘Mulholland Drive’, channels Nick Cave and could easily fit into the soundtrack of the David Lynch film of the same name, and elicits a feeling of sadness and hopelessness, which should be at odds with the uptempo instrumentals, but nonetheless works perfectly.
