I was at The Islington on Thursday night to catch Pete Gardiner’s set but the opening act of the night was a young lady who just might have a big future. Talia Raz is just sixteen years of age but has a voice filled with raw emotion which lends itself beautifully to the covers and original songs she sang.
With just a pianist as accompaniment she sang a couple of original songs and lovely versions of Corrine Bailey Rae, George Ezra and Amy Winehouse but the stand out song for me was an excellent cover of Zak Abel’s ‘Unstable’. It’s great to see this excellent track being sung. I was lucky enough to catch Zak at the Barn on the Farm Festival last year and can’t wait to see him there again in July. I’m sure he would have been knocked out by Talia’s delivery of his song.
The crowd at The Islington certainly seemed charmed by her giggly effervescent stage presence that reminded me a lot of the first time I saw Izzy Bizu and she obviously loved every second of her curtain raising performance last night. Her mother in the audience looked on with pride as her daughter belied her tender age with her confidence and delivery, and friends in the audience cheered her on through every song.
I hope to see more of Talia on stage and will be watching with interest to see where she sings next. I would recommend taking the opportunity to see her if she performs again soon and hope that we get to hear more of her in the very near future.
