Out today, Emma Blackery’s newest EP, ‘Magnetised’ does exactly what it says on the tin. The super catchy album of six songs hooks you in right from the start and doesn’t let go.
Opening with ‘Nothing Without You’, one is immediately reminded of Taylor Swift, with Emma’s sweet vocals an excellent match to the country-tinged track. Piano-led, with a strong drum beat, it’s a song which lyrically suggests it should be sad, a song about a break up, but the fast pace tells us there’s hope, a light at the end of the tunnel – she’s moved on but she’s learned from it.
‘Fixation’, teases us by pulling the tempo down a notch to begin with, but quickly races apace, and again, we have Emma unlucky in love – but learning from the experience. Her lyrics are raw, honest, and super-emotional, but matched to high energy instrumentation.
Title track, ‘Magnetised’, sees Emma testing the waters of love yet again, but this time, her intended is still involved with another. “Because you love me, you love her too…what’s a boy to do…” By the end of the song, he decides to stay with his first lover and our hearts are broken with Emma’s.
With ‘Instead’, we’re six months down the track, and it seems Emma is still in love with the person in ‘Magnetised’. By this time we’re fully invested, and want her to find true love. With the fifth song, ‘Don’t Come Home’, we’re back to strong Emma, even though she’s still really very vulnerable. Back at the start, we said we were reminded of Taylor Swift, and it feels like she really has taken a leaf out of Ms Swift’s book, and writes from her heart and experience. There’s a lot of love, a lot of heartache in ‘Magnetised’, and it’s with the final song, ‘Human’, that we come full circle, with a sort of epilogue. Emma tells us it’s all natural, all part of life, it’s just human nature.
