The album is a departure from Stan’s usual style of singing and rapping to classical guitar – he’s lately dropped his instrument, and now concentrates on the lyrics, and has become a favourite on the spoken word scene. Listening to the album you focus more on the meaning – hidden as well as obvious. The lyrics are about life in Essex, on the dole, relationships, TV. Puns and plays on words (pear for pair for instance) make the album all the more enjoyable, the ten tracks draw you in, compelling you to see both the humour and sadness – hopelessness even – of a life that appears to have no direction or purpose.

Stan Blade takes his inspiration from the likes of George The Poet, Jamie T, and Kate Tempest, and doesn’t write down his lyrics, but instead freestyles, with the idea that if it’s any good, he’ll remember it when it comes time to record. And it works – at that point he knows the lyrics by heart, and records in one take, capturing the life, cadence, and beauty of the spoken word.
