Electric 5 – ‘Crazy’ (Gnarls Barkley Cover)

Chicago based Electric 5 are a classical crossover electric string quintet, performing unique and choreographed string interpretations of popular music. Their rendition of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ is simply breathtaking, and has a video to match.

The video opens with the story of a woman scorned, taking her revenge out on her partner. Adia, the founder of the group, plays this role with great gusto. She sharpens her knife after finding out her partner had cheated on her, and we see her descent into madness – crazy. The haunting layers of the five string melodies and harmonies is perfect for this cinematic marvel.

Aida prepares her retaliation while clips of the three members of the group (their current bass player wasn’t a member at the time of shooting) are interwoven.

Electric 5 are genre-defying, with their act including vocals from Adia, who also uses a ‘wah-wah’ pedal with her electric violin. Adia in fact won the 2014 Judges Selection for the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour, and in 2013 won the Steve Vai Best In Shred competition. Electric 5 haven’t been together very long, but with tracks like this, they are clearly destined for bigger and better things.
