Indie pop/electro band STRFKR was formed in 2007 by Joshua Hodges and has been making waves on the Indie scene ever since. Composed of Hodges, as well as Ryan Bjornstad, Shawn Glassford, their fourth album, ‘Being No One, Going Nowhere’, traces its roots to the tiny Mojave Desert census-designated place (too small to be a town!) of Joshua Tree, where Hodges packed up and moved to from his Los Angeles apartment.

“It came together for me in the desert,” he says. “Out there, it’s easy to feel small and slow.”

STRFKR’s track, ‘Open Your Eyes’, the first from the album which is set for release on November 4, is an earworming song that demands more than one listen, and is accompanied by a video that gorgeously showcases the beautiful desert – with an added alien encounter.

Initially the song reminds us of The Killers, but Hodges’ vocals and lyrics are something else that we can’t put our finger on. It’s a beautiful sound nonetheless.

The video is very funny, with the main character being approached by two aliens, who announce that Earth is destined for destruction, and that theirs was just a courtesy call. Of course, the earthling doesn’t like this idea one bit, and challenges the visitors to a best of five contest, “my turf my rules”. It’s slightly worrying when it’s two all, but in the end, he challenges them to a drinking contest, and easily drinks them under the table, therefore winning, and the Earth is saved from demolition.

Both lighthearted and visually enticing, the video is a great complement to the song, which has a real shoegaze vibe to it. Check out STRFKR on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. ‘Being No One, Going Nowhere’ is available from Polyvinyl Records on LP, CD, tape, and digital download.
