Chrystyna Marie Aims A ‘Loaded Gun’ With Debut Solo EP

Canadian born singer songwriter Chrystyna Marie aims a ‘Loaded Gun’ at us with her first solo EP.

Former lead singer of LA band Greencat, Chrystyna has decided to go it alone in order to release her music, with her own sound.

Title track, ‘Loaded Gun’, is a sultry smooth number, with Chrystyna’s voice being compared to that of both Christina Aguilera and Janis Joplin – smokey and gritty, raw and bluesy. Chrystyna tells us, she “doesn’t need six shots, I only need just one” – and that is all it takes, as the song is earwormy and very easy on the ears.

Classically trained Chrystyna has featured as a demo singer on indie labels from when she was just 18. She also supported acts in her local Toronto, Ontario area, and won in various categories at the Kiwanis Music Festival (now known as the Sault Ste. Marie Music Festival), which is held every year at the Algoma Conservatory of Music. She’s acted in local community plays, taking the lead in the likes of West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz; she’s also played smaller roles in music videos and TV, and was the lead singer of LA pop group, Greencat.

The second song of the four track EP, ‘Down The Road’, is similar in style to the title track, ‘Loaded Gun’: all smoke and southern blues. In an interview with Vents Magazine, she said,

“They all have a very special meaning to me. I hold Loaded Gun and Down The Road as two defining songs out of the four. Loaded Gun was about a moment I took charge of my own life, finally put myself first and got out of a bad situation rather than be stuck in it for life. Down The Road was about my childhood and overcoming personal demons.”

Track three ‘No More’ takes it up a notch and incorporates more pop stylings, and reminds us of Australian duo, The Veronicas. Fourth track ‘The Tower’, is a song which sees Chrystyna show what her voice is made of – strong, versatile, and beautiful.

Speaking about her new work, Marie says,

“Breath is life, and life is music. I wanted to create music from personal experiences and true emotions. Something the everyday person can relate to and build strength from having been exposed to it. With a raw and gritty feel to emulate these experiences and emotions”.

‘Loaded Gun’ has been released on Chrystyna Marie’s own label. Although the artist has worked with the indies over the years, she felt it was the only way she could truly make her music the way she wanted. It’s been the right choice – four tracks is not enough – we hope we hear more of what Chrystyna has in store for us – and soon.

Chrystyna Marie’s debut EP, ‘Loaded Gun’, is set for release on February 29. You can preorder it from iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. Find Chrystyna online on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, SoundCloud, and her website.
